Privacy Policy
The short version: Farpane doesn't collect your data. There's no account, no analytics, no advertising and no tracking. The app connects directly to the computers you choose, and nothing passes through a server run by us.
What we collect
Nothing. We don't run any servers for the app, and it doesn't send us information about you, your computers or how you use it.
What stays on your iPhone
Farpane stores these on your device so it can work:
- Host details: the names, addresses, ports, usernames, connection settings and SSH or TLS identity details of the computers you add.
- Passwords: kept in the iOS Keychain on this device only, and available only while your iPhone is unlocked. They aren't included in backups that move to another device.
- Thumbnails: a small image of each computer's screen from your last session, shown in your host list. Hosts that require Face ID or a passcode don't show one.
- App settings: your preferences, such as pointer speed.
Apart from passwords, this information can be included in your own iCloud or computer backups of your iPhone, under the settings you've chosen. Deleting a host removes its details and passwords. Deleting the app removes the other stored data, though iOS may keep Keychain items until you erase your device.
What goes to your computers
When you connect, Farpane sends data directly to the computer you chose, and through the SSH server you chose if you use a tunnel:
- your sign-in details
- your keyboard, mouse and touch input
- clipboard text, when you paste or if you turn on clipboard sync, which is off by default
That computer sends back its screen and, on a Mac, its sound. Farpane shows these to you and doesn't send them anywhere else. How each computer handles this data is up to its owner.
Some connections aren't encrypted, depending on the server and route you use. Farpane shows the current state in the session status.
Permissions
- Local network: used to find and connect to computers on your network, and to check whether they're online.
- Face ID: used only if you choose to require unlocking before connecting. iOS handles this, and Farpane never sees your biometric data.
Other services
Farpane contains no third-party analytics or advertising code. Apple may give developers crash reports and usage statistics if you've chosen to share them in iOS Settings. These don't identify you. If you connect through a service such as Tailscale, that service's own privacy policy applies.
Purchases
Apple handles the free trial and the unlock through your Apple Account. Farpane only checks with the App Store on your iPhone whether your account has them. We never see your payment details or your Apple Account, and Apple's own privacy policy covers these purchases.
Children
Farpane isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from anyone, including children.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update this page and its effective date.
